Having a roof over your head is something that we all need but often taken for granted.

Updated: Dec 16, 2019

Unfortunately, your roof won’t take care of itself, so it is up to you to take care of your roof and address issues when they come up. There are many roofing myths several of which can result in damage. Let’s look at a few of the common mistakes people make when caring for their roofs and learn the correct way to maintain yours.

  1. Over-Insulating Your Home -Yes, There is such a thing as using too much insulation for your roof. If your home has an attic, too much insulation won’t allow the room to ventilate which can cause mold to grow and other issues, such as losing some of the life expectancy of your roof.

  2. Not Regularly Inspecting Your Roof - Just because you don’t see any leaks doesn’t mean there aren’t issues with your roof. Take the time to inspect your roof so you can handle small repairs when needed or if this is out of your comfort circle, call a trusted company to help you with an inspection and consultation,

  3. Not Checking Your Attic - Often when we think about roofs we only inspect the outside of your home, you may be missing out on some obvious signs that your roof needs to be serviced or replaced. Periodically check your attic, especially after a heavy storm of wind and rain, to look for signs of mold growth, excessive moisture or daylight coming through the roof boards.

  4. Re-Roofing Over Shingles - No matter what you do, do not simply nail new shingles over old ones. And to give full disclosure on this, we use to do this 20-25 years ago when inspectors and manufactures stated that this was okay. Old shingles need to be removed and replaced by new ones for a host of reasons. Shingle manufactures will still guarantee their product on a lay-over, and some contractors will install them that way, we do not at BMG -- Call a Professional!
